Counselling and Psychotherapy
Typically a counsellor will have qualified after a period of two to three years training.
In this time they will have had both academic and practical experience aimed at facilitating people to identify ways to problem solve and identify new options and skills to function better in their relationships and/or daily life.
"TA counselling is a professional activity within a clearly defined contractual relationship. The process enables clients to develop awareness, options and skills in daily life, through the enhancement of the individual's strengths and resources. The aim is to increase the client's autonomy in relation to the social and cultural environment" - www.uktransactionalanalysis.co.uk
Individuals who wish to train as Psychotherapists will generally need post-graduate, or similar level education in the medical (including nursing), social science and counselling disciplines. The training period is between 4-6 years (depending upon the theory model) and focuses on the identification and treatment of mood disorders, personality disorders and deeper psychological issues which will cause an individual to have severe trouble in functioning in some aspect of their life and/or relationships.
Psychotherapy is "The treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insight into problems, with the goal being relief of symptoms, changes in behaviour leading to improved social and vocational functioning, and personality growth" - www.Answers.com
Transactional Analysis (TA) is one of a multitude of theories covering working with the vagaries of the human mind. Others that are commonly known are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person Centred, Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic, Gestalt to name a few! In Transactional Analysis theory the client/therapist relationship is based on open communication and bilateral contracting so both client and therapist are clear about the work being done and the goals to be achieved. The core values of Transactional Analysis are that everyone has worth, can think for themselves and can change. See www.uktransactionalanalysis.co.uk
